One of a kind island-style luxury in the heart of the San Fernando Valley
9701 Bothwell in Northridge combines creativity and accessibility in a designer showplace.
Universal design in a resort-themed environment
Overview
Designed and reconstructed by Josh and Jenna Spencer, founders of The Last Bookstore, this sprawling Northridge residence merges a tropical sanctuary with architectural intention. Styled in collaboration with Meridith Baer Home and designer Rachel Winer, this fully accessible one-level home balances volcanic stone, natural redwood exterior overhangs, botanical lighting, and thoughtful sculptural curation throughout. Cedar-lined closets, handcrafted wood beams, and material restraint reflect a philosophy of healthy, intentional living.
Entrance
Stone pillars meet vaulted redwood for a grand yet grounded arrival. An oversized steel pivot door opens to a loft-like plan, establishing a refined, quietly confident tone from the start.
Kitchen & Appliances
A seamless concrete kitchen and open cabinetry evoke a Wabi-Sabi ethos — honest materials, visible simplicity, and an elegance rooted in intention over excess. A Fisher & Paykel appliance suite anchors the space with quiet power and sculptural restraint.
Primary Bath Suite
A spa-like retreat anchored by Himalayan salt lighting and a custom copper faucet fashioned from vintage piping, designed to cradle living plants and support natural oxygen flow. Matte stone, black stone, and brass accents create an atmosphere of quiet restoration, while French doors open directly to a private garden, extending the ritual outdoors.
Living Room Divide & Lava Wall
A warm, floor-to-ceiling shelf divider meets the volcanic-stone fireplace — an elemental junction and the emotional center of the home.
Stonework & Hardware
Raw volcanic stone meets brass switch plates and European hardware — a tactile, intentional detail carried quietly throughout the home.
Onyx Sink in Guest Bath
In the guest bath, a hand-carved onyx stone sink sits against a lava-stone wall, pairing raw geology with sculptural calm. An artesian steel sliding door completes the space with quiet weight and intention.
Primary Double Doors
Tall, hand-carved wood doors open to the primary suite, creating a defined moment of arrival and quiet presence.
Living Loft & Lighting
Wrapped in seamless wood, the primary loft offers an uninterrupted space for focus and creative flow. Skylights trace the sun throughout the day, while custom fixtures cradle hanging botanicals for subtle air purification and natural calm.
An Edible Garden
Mature lemon-lime, pink grapefruit, fig, and banana trees form a private, year-round fruit garden. Angels-trumpet blooms filter light and send a subtle natural fragrance across the property.
Cedar Closets in Bedrooms/Hallway
Cedar-lined closets in the bedroom and hallway offer natural pest resistance and a clean, subtle wood aroma.
